Sitting at a Computer

The Problem

Sitting badly at your computer through poor computer set-up can result in back pain, neck pain, repetitive strain injuries and other symptoms.  An increasing number of people consult an Osteopath with computer-related symptoms.
A common problem is people twisting to use their computer.  This causes a build up of muscle imbalances which can lead to pain.
So I set out some basic advice to help reduce the incidence of these problems.

The Approach

Here are a series of tests/questions to use to check that you are sitting properly and your computer is set-up correctly.

  1. Are the monitor and keyboard directly in front of where you are sitting?
  2. If you stretch your arm straight in front of you, does your middle finger just touch the screen and is it pointing at the centre of the screen?
  3. Is your back resting against the back of the chair when you are using the computer?
  4. Are your feet resting flat on the floor? – you may need a foot rest.
  5. Is the keyboard at or just below elbow height?
  6. Is the mouse close to the keyboard?
  7. If you mainly type, is the letter ‘B’ on the keyboard in line with your Bellybutton?
  8. Do you use a gentle touch on the keyboard so that you do not reach the key-bed with every tap?
  9. If you mainly use the mouse, is your arm by your side, not outstretched, when using the mouse?
  10. Do you take regular breaks to stand up, stretch and move away from the computer, 5-10 mins every hour?

How did you do?

If  you can answer ‘Yes’ to all these questions – Congratulations!!!
You have a good workstation set-up.
