Assessment of new-born babies
Feeding difficulties, excessive crying, colic, and disturbed sleep patterns can all be symptoms of poor remoulding of the head after birth. Babies with asymmetry in their head bones will often be restless and discontented as their head remains in a compressed arrangement. Gentle cranial manipulation by an osteopath will help the head to remould and the head bones to be correctly aligned. Treatment involves very gentle and subtle movements of the hands on the head. Babies generally enjoy having treatment and are very relaxed and contented.
If babies are treated at birth then problems are not allowed to build up. A more contented and easy baby benefits both the baby and parents. We are actively promoting routine assessment of newborn babies in keeping with the adage ‘Prevention is better than cure’.
How do we treat?
Deborah practices structural osteopathy focusing on movement patterns in joints and assessment of muscle tone. Structural osteopathy identifies and treats imbalances that restrict movement. Deborah would not describe herself as a cranial osteopath which involves working with fluid flow in the body. However, Deborah does use a structural based osteopathic cranial treatment which addresses imbalances in movement and asymmetry between cranial bones, and is particularly useful for children.
Treatment and prevention of developmental disorders
As a preventative measure we offer check-ups at the milestones of sitting, crawling and walking to reassure you that your infant is learning to move correctly and developing the motor skills and co-ordination necessary for future health and development. Many children with developmental disorders were either late or never fully achieved milestones of sitting, crawling and walking. Often these children have poor movement co-ordination and motor skills.
Treatment of developmental disorders involves a 3 stage approach:
- Identifying and treating any stiffness in joints and muscles and assessing the head for asymmetry
- Teaching exercises to improve co-ordination and motor skills by working both sides of the brain
- Advice on how diet can help with the condition.
Children with developmental disorders will need a progressive programme of treatment but improvements can be noticed very early on by children, parents and teachers.
